Everything that counts toward 100% in GTA 5
The same five categories as the 100% checklist in the game, in the order you will usually meet them. Names follow the in-game checklist.
Story missions
All 69 count, worth 55% of the total.
Where a heist lets you pick an approach, its lines count once whichever you pick. Only one of the three endings counts. The order is the usual one; some stretches can be played in any order.
Nothing to show here.
Strangers and Freaks
All 24 count, worth 10% of the total.
Only Franklin's count. The game's counter shows 20, because four of these add nothing, but those four unlock the others, so all 24 have to be played. The tracker spreads the 10% over all 24. The Last One opens after 100% and isn't needed.
Nothing to show here.
Hobbies and Pastimes
All 42 count, worth 10% of the total.
The 42 entries that count, out of 61 in the game. Hunting, yoga, bail bonds and arms trafficking are not needed. Parachuting is two entries that cover all 13 jumps between them.
Nothing to show here.
Random events
Any 14 of these 57 count, worth 5% of the total.
Any 14 count. Events with a character name only happen for that character. Newer versions add three more for returning players (Duel, Sea Plane, Monkey Mosaic); you never need them to reach 14.
Nothing to show here.
Miscellaneous
All 16 count, worth 20% of the total.

How the percentage works
Each category is a fixed share of the 100%, and the tracker splits that share equally between the items that count. One story mission adds about 0.8% and one random event about 0.36%. A 15th random event, a 26th stunt jump or a 9th knife flight adds nothing.
The game's own figure can differ by a fraction of a point partway through Strangers and Freaks, where four missions add nothing. Both reach 100% at the same time.
What doesn't count
- Gold medals and better mission ratings.
- Collectibles other than the spaceship parts and letter scraps: Epsilon tracts, peyote plants, submarine parts, nuclear waste.
- Michael's and Trevor's Strangers and Freaks missions.
- The other two endings, and the prep missions of the heist approach you didn't pick.
- Anything in GTA Online.
Before you start the last stretch
Leave the four optional Lester assassinations (Multi Target, Vice, Bus and Construction) until after the final mission. By then all three characters have much more cash to put into the stock market, and the stock market planner shows what to buy before and after each one.
Questions
What counts toward 100% in GTA 5?
Five categories: 69 story missions (55%), Franklin's Strangers and Freaks missions (10%), 42 Hobbies and Pastimes (10%), any 14 random events (5%) and 16 miscellaneous tasks (20%).
Why does the game count 20 Strangers and Freaks when this list has 24?
Four of Franklin's 24 Strangers and Freaks missions add no percentage, so the game's counter stops at 20. Those four unlock the others, so you still play all 24. Michael's and Trevor's don't count.
Do I need gold medals for 100%?
No. Finishing a mission or activity is enough. Gold medals and better mission ratings don't change the percentage.
Do Epsilon tracts, peyote plants or submarine parts count?
No. Among the collectibles, only the 50 spaceship parts and the 50 letter scraps count. Epsilon tracts, peyote plants, submarine parts and nuclear waste don't.
What do you get for 100% in GTA 5?
The Career Criminal trophy or achievement, a 100% T-shirt for Franklin, UFOs that start to appear in the sky, and a last Strangers and Freaks mission, The Last One.
